Santorini is a Mediterranean destination that, much like the rest of Greece, plays host to some absolutely incredible sunshine and warmth all year round. That said, not everyone is in it for the weather, and the nicer the temperature and the brighter the sunshine, the more expensive (and busy!) things tend to get.

So, much like we did with our guide to the best time to visit Greece, we're taking a look at the best time to visit Santorini in particular. We'll be looking at weather as a priority, but will also take you through when you might want to visit to save the most money or to enjoy the most peaceful strolls on the beach.

Before you even start thinking about packing for a Santorini getaway, however, make sure you have a SIMOVO eSIM for Greece downloaded to your phone. You'll be able to connect to the best available mobile data networks across the region, and you're topped up before you travel — meaning there are no nasty roaming costs to come home to.

Santorini weather and climate explained

Santorini, as a Greek island, benefits from a superb Mediterranean climate, meaning you're guaranteed lots of sunshine no matter when you travel here. For that reason, too, you can expect the summers to be very hot indeed. What's more, its summers are typically very dry, and its winters are mild but wet. It's worth thinking about what type of weather you're most comfortable with and to book your flights and rooms ahead of time.

July tends to be the hottest month and January the coldest, and people enjoy taking to the water any time between the start of the summer and the start of fall. In our shared opinion, going for a swim or a dive in fall is the sweet spot, as you'll still be able to enjoy some leftover warmth without the massive crowds.

Santorini benefits from a northern wind known as the Meltemi. This is a feature that is particularly strong across the summer, bracing across the Aegean, which can cool you off a little during the hottest months.

Essentially, if you're looking for some Mediterranean sun, Santorini is just one corner of Greece that's well worth booking in for. Santorini by season

To break down how Santorini looks and feels across the year, let's dive into a brief breakdown of the island as you can expect it across the four main seasons. Keep in mind that, for this guide, we're looking at the seasons from a Northern Hemisphere perspective.

[numbered title="Santorini in spring" pill="Blooms and crisp air"]Spring, as you'd expect, is a lovely time of year to watch wildlife and see the best of the island's flowers bloom. You can usually expect average highs here of around 73°F by the time May rolls around, though the heat has been more intense on occasion! Santorini in spring has a great vibe, with the flora transforming and the weather being nice and crisp. Just be aware that not all hotels on the island will be open, and the water's likely not warm enough to swim in yet.[/numbered] [numbered title="Santorini in summer" pill="Peak heat and crowds"]Santorini summers are characteristically intense. You can expect averages of around 85°F, and as mentioned, the Meltemi will sweep in to give you some relief from the heat. We'd only seriously recommend visiting Santorini in the summer if you're a real heat hunter — as it can be too intense for a lot of people. It's gorgeous this time of year, but it's also pretty expensive, and the biggest crowds build up around now.[/numbered] [numbered title="Santorini in fall" pill="Sweet spot season"]Fall is a great time of year to go island hopping in Greece, and Santorini's temperatures ease from the high 70s and low 80s in September into the 60s by November. It's the off-season for the island, generally, meaning some of the more bustling town scenes will simmer down. It's the best time of year, however, for comfortable, cost-effective travel, and if you're heading here to hike or take photos, you can do so with minimal crowd interference.[/numbered] [numbered title="Santorini in winter" pill="Quiet and crisp"]Winter isn't the most popular time of year for Santorini travelers, but it's quiet, cool, and crisp, with temperatures in the 50s. It's when some towns will close down completely, but again, it's great for people looking for a quiet break and who don't mind missing out on some attractions being closed when they arrive.[/numbered]

Best months to visit Santorini

The best month to visit Santorini, in our collective opinion, is either September or October. The sea's still warm, the sun's always shining, and you won't get lost in the crowd. The air is nice and crisp, and you can still explore some of the island's fantastic town scenes before they close down for the year.

That said, if you love the heat of the summer and want to experience Santorini at its most dramatic and beautiful, go ahead and travel between June and August! It makes for some fabulous memories — just remember that it comes at an inflated price, and that you'll need to book ahead as early as you can to secure the best spots on the plane and in your chosen resort.

That said, if you're really keen to visit Santorini but don't mind the weather being a little chilly, winter is a great time of year to look out across its stunning vistas and to really explore the island at its least touristy. The choice is yours — but again, book in advance, regardless of what you intend to get out of the island.

Santorini travel tips

Let's close up this guide with some must-try Santorini travel tips, useful whether you're a newbie here or a returning visitor.

[warning]If you're heading here in summer, seriously — pack the high SPF sunscreen and wear wide-brimmed hats! Do also make sure you drink plenty of water, as dehydration can catch you unawares before you even know it.[/warning] [warning]That said, be careful how you drink water — it's not safe to do so from the tap. Stick to bottled water across your island stay, even when brushing your teeth or using ice. Thankfully, bottled water here is very affordable.[/warning] [tip title="Fly directly into Santorini"]Santorini has an airport that many airlines will fly you directly to, meaning you shouldn't have to worry about changing via the mainland (unless you're making it a round trip via Greece, too!).[/tip] [tip title="Explore the island's unique beaches"]Santorini has some fantastic unique beaches that are well worth exploring, and not all will be like the sandy tourist spots you might expect. Be a little adventurous, and you might get to enjoy the black sands of Kamari or even the red rockery at the suitably named Red Beach.[/tip] [tip title="Don't flush toilet paper"]When using the restroom in Santorini, never flush toilet paper. The plumbing systems are very narrow across the island, so you'll need to use wastebaskets.[/tip] [tip title="Book a volcano and hot springs boat tour"]To make the most of the area's volcanic crater and hot spring landscape, book a boat tour to explore the island from the water.[/tip] [faq] [q]What is the best time to visit Santorini?[/q] [a]September or October generally offer the best balance of warm weather, still-warm seas, and thinner crowds.
