Football, soccer, whatever you like to call it – it’s big all over the world, but when it comes to real passion for the sport, you’re unlikely to have Britain beat. Specifically, England is absolutely football crazy – and its Premier League is the cream of the crop when it comes to the best talent representing towns and cities across the country.
The English Premier League starts up every August and plays through to the next May – meaning that, if you’re reading this when we’ve just published, there really isn’t long until matches kick off again. In fact, for 2025/26, the Premier League restarts as of Friday, August 15th, and will end as of Sunday, May 24th.
That’s plenty of time to plan trips over to the UK to get into some world-class football – but, some of the most exciting matches take place right at the start of the season, when there’s a blank slate!
Let’s learn a little bit more about the Premiership, and why you’ll want to load up an eSIM before coming to enjoy the sporting action.
What is the Premier League?
The English football Premier League is a yearly battle between 20 of the country’s best football teams. However, let’s get this out of the way first – it is also open to some Welsh sides, such as Swansea, Cardiff, and Wrexham – who, at the time of writing, are not playing in what’s known as “top flight” (i.e., the Premiership).
The EPL has been around since the early 1990s, when the old three-division football league system was restructured. The new league was reserved for 22 teams that initially resigned from the “old” First Division, making up the cream of English and Welsh football at the very top.
Some of the teams that have played in the Premier League over the decades are truly world class. Believe it or not, however, only six have been in top-flight since the very beginning. Those are teams that soccer fans all over the world are likely to have heard of – Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur (“Spurs”), Chelsea, Liverpool, and Everton. And yet, only four of these have won the league so far (spare a thought for Spurs and Everton).
Bizarrely, that does mean that international clubs like Manchester City and Leeds United have dipped in and out of the Premiership over the years – and, in the past decade, the league has only been won by Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Leicester City (and that last one was a huge upset by all accounts)!
Even more fascinatingly, only seven clubs have ever won the Premier League since 1992 – so it’s safe to say the best clubs really are titans worth beating! Manchester City and Liverpool have won every Premiership between them since 2018 – time to break the deadlock, maybe?
Who’s Likely to Win the 2025/26 Premier League?
Ask any true fan and they’ll tell you their team will be champions this year! However, bookmakers seem to think it’ll be between Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United. Safe bets all around, really!
Unfortunately, fans of Leeds, West Ham, Wolves, Sunderland, and Burnley are getting the longer odds this season – meaning they’re the least likely of the pack to challenge for the title of champion.
That said, there are always upsets and “giant kills” in the Premier League. It’s all the more reason why so many people still pack stadiums to go and see world-class football up close – and this season is certainly not going to be any different.
In fact, pre-pandemic, it was estimated that more than 1.5 million visits to the UK included watching a live football match – and much of that, theoretically, has to be thanks to the international pulling power of the Premier League!
What also appeals to international fans about the Premier League is that each team typically has a mixed bag of stars from all over the world. While there’s still tons of British talent packed into these clubs, people pay to see the best of Europe, Asia, and the Americas on British pitches!
Got Your Tickets Ready?
If you’re really into Premier League football, the chances are you’ve already got your fixtures list ready to go and you’re raring to watch some games. However, as well as making sure you’ve got your flights and accommodation sorted out, you should also take time to buy and download an eSIM so you’re covered for mobile data while you visit the UK.
eSIMs allow you to connect to the fastest and most secure mobile networks available in the UK at any given time. Therefore, instead of risking connecting to potentially unsafe public WiFi or having to hunt around for a physical SIM when you arrive, you’re ready to connect to up to 5G speeds through Three, one of the UK’s most reliable carriers.
SIMOVO’s UK eSIMs allow you to budget for data ahead of time, too. Just choose how much data you’re likely to need and set how long you’re travelling for. You’re instantly saving money compared to what might happen if, say, you end up running up massive bills with your usual mobile carrier.
And, if you know you’re going to need more than a little data to share some of your football trips across the country each day, you can take advantage of our unlimited UK eSIMs, with daily data resets of 2GB for up to two weeks.
That means you can go about your football fan journeying with one less worry on your mind – you’re connected to friends and family through apps such as FaceTime and WhatsApp, and you can keep streaming and sharing photos without ever getting interrupted.
Now’s the time to start planning ahead for any Premier League trips you might have in mind – just make sure you have a reliable eSIM ready to go before you touch down!
