From historic forts to sparkling sands, Puerto Rico is a must-see Caribbean destination - all the more so if you’re a US citizen, as you can come visit without a passport! Puerto Rico is sunny and vibrant all year round, which is only partly what makes it such a popular destination for itinerary builders.
Several of the SIMOVO crew have visited Puerto Rico already (they helped us write our guide to Puerto Rico fun facts, after all!), so we asked them about what they’d put into the perfect itinerary for the island. It took some whittling down! We’ve also checked out expert opinions online, too, to help put together a guide to building the perfect Puerto Rico itinerary so you can make the most of the area.
Remember, however, that - much like our other itinerary guides - this post should be used as an introduction to the island, meaning that you can swap out some of our top picks and design your own tour around the country as you wish. Just make sure you consult our eSIM for Puerto Rico so you can stay connected to mobile data as you travel. SIMOVO eSIMs connect you to the best available network(s) on the island, and you’re topped up with the data you need before you go.
Without further ado, then, let’s dive into the best of what Puerto Rico has to offer.
Old San Juan
San Juan is the capital of Puerto Rico and, honestly, you could spend the whole of your itinerary here and you’d still head home happy! Old San Juan is a stunning melting pot of colonial Spanish culture, art, music, and delicious food.
The city blends a lively Caribbean spirit with stacks of historic charm, with historic forts like Castillo San Cristóbal and the Museo de dan Juan offering fascinating deep dives into what makes Puerto Rico so unique.
It’s just as lively at night as it is during the day, and to really make the most of the city, we recommend taking a guided tour of its historic streets.
El Yunque rainforest
The El Yunque National Rainforest is absolutely bursting with nature - as you’d expect! It’s very easy to drive to and around, making it the perfect addition to any road trip itinerary across the island.
You’ll find the island has a range of walking and hiking trails for beginners up to experts, and there are waterfalls and water features abound. You’ll need to book before you visit, understandably!
Vieques
Believe it or not, Puerto Rico is even home to several islands of its own! The first of these we’re covering is Vieques, famous for its fantastic wildlife refuge and bioluminescent waters.
Vieques has a small community and a nice selection of nightlife spots, meaning if you’d like to go wildlife spotting during the day and raise the roof in the evening, you are more than free and welcome to do so!
Culebra
Culebra is another of Puerto Rico’s islands that, unlike Vieques, is a little more laid back. It’s a marine life spotter’s paradise, and if you really prioritize getting off the beaten track, it’s a nice break from tourist norms. There are hotels out here, but you won’t ever feel overwhelmed.
The island is famous for its Flamenco Beach, diving experiences, and - this is totally true - island tours via golf cart! Like Vieques, there’s also a wildlife refuge here that’s worth every penny if you’re an animal lover.

Travel tips for Puerto Rico
As always, let’s close our guide with a few quick travel tips to keep in mind when building a Puerto Rico itinerary.
- Puerto Rico is humid across the year, meaning you should always expect things to be sweltering! We recommend visiting around winter to spring for the driest, safest weather.
- Grab a US National Parks pass - it’ll cover you for all kinds of sites across Puerto Rico, including Castillo San Cristóbal in Old San Juan.
- We’ve only really covered one side of the island in this guide! Be sure to explore different towns and coastal resorts based on what experts say online.
- Be sure to learn a few Spanish phrases - English is spoken here, but not widely.
- Grab some SPF 50 and plenty of aftersun - it’s sunny here all year round, so be prepared to crisp up if you don’t protect your skin!
Now you know what to put into your Puerto Rico itinerary, be sure to grab yourself an eSIM to make sure your data’s covered - and if you’re going further afield, an eSIM for South America may be just the ticket.
