Best Time to Visit Greece: Season-by-Season Guide

Greece has an amazing and well-deserved reputation for being one of the sunniest countries on the planet, meaning there's little wonder why so many people holiday here. But, when is the best time to visit Greece based on weather and tourism seasons? What about the Greek islands?

In this guide, the SIMOVO team has taken the time to break down when they prefer to spend time in Greece the most, and when the best weather and crowd levels will be for your preferred type of holiday.

As always, we recommend you download and use an eSIM for Greece no matter what time of year you travel, so you're always covered for accessible mobile data with none of the scary charges you might face from your home network.

Greece weather and travel seasons explained

It's easy to assume that summer, in the northern hemisphere, is always going to be the best time of year to visit Greece. It's not an incorrect assumption by any means, but keep in mind Greece and its islands have a Mediterranean climate, which means the sun shines here most of the year - and when summer hits, it's extremely hot!

Travel experts (and the SIMOVO team) actually advise that the best time to visit Greece is somewhere between the middle of spring and the middle of fall. It's during this time when you're least likely to experience rainfall, and you also benefit from smaller crowds and milder weather if you choose April or October over, say, June or July.

The best time of year to travel to Greece will also depend on what you'd like to do here. If you're keen to go hiking across the mountains, then the milder months of the year are perfect. That said, summer is a great time to escape lowland heat if you're looking to explore the peaks.

Greece's tourist season, therefore, falls neatly between Easter and just before Halloween. Travel outside of those times, and the crowds will be smaller, but you won't get the best weather - and some attractions may be closed down until next year.

Greece by season

To help break down when to visit Greece a little further, here's our guide on what to expect season by season, mostly based on weather, but also on tourism. Keep these tips in mind when building a Greece itinerary based on our guide, too!

Greece in spring

Greece is nice and warm in spring, with April tending to bring the best temperatures and the least chance of rainfall. It's around this time of year when things tend to get quite busy, but you have the benefit of a nice breeze and sunshine that isn't stifling.

Greece in summer

Greece is absolutely amazing to behold in summer, but do keep in mind that the temperatures absolutely explode, and there's minimal rainfall. Even if you really want to top up on your tan, you might feel more than a bit uncomfortable doing so! It is, however, a fantastic time to go diving and snorkeling, as the sea will be nice and toasty, too.

Greece in fall/autumn

Greece's fall or autumn days are surprisingly long and sunny - the summer really does tend to go on forever here - but the weather generally gets milder, which does make adventuring around the various regions a bit more comfortable. It's also a great time of year to go swimming, because the water is still fairly warm - it won't start cooling off in a big way until the winter months kick in.

Greece in winter

If you really want to beat the crowds, winter is the time of year you'll want to visit Greece. It's extremely mild in the south, whereas the north tends to get quite chilly - and yes, you can even expect rainfall between December and February, so you'll want to pack accordingly. However, we really think you're missing out on the best that Greece has to offer if you arrive during the winter months - the water will be far too cold, and a lot of the most popular attractions will be closed.

Best months to visit Greece

Generally speaking, we'd say that April and October are the best months to visit Greece, at least when it comes to the sweet spot of mild weather and low tourism. If you're looking for cheap destinations to explore but still want to experience the best of Europe's sun and sea, these shoulder months tend to be your best shot at affordable flights, accommodation, and day rates.

That said, some of you out there will probably be thinking July or August are the best months to visit Greece - and honestly, more power to you! It's during this time that the islands, mainland, and surrounding waters really shine. It just happens to get quite overwhelming for some people, meaning if you've never visited before and would prefer a calmer, less sweltering experience, April and October are your best bets.

Best time to visit Greek islands

The best time of year to visit the Greek islands, again, tends to fall somewhere around late spring and early fall/autumn. Keep in mind that you're going to have more access to sea breezes, and that you may not see as many tourists here compared to the mainland. That said, the Greek islands do still get very busy during the height of summer, so be prepared to travel a little out of season for the most laid-back vacation experience.

That said, if you want to experience the best nightlife and beach scenes, July and August (i.e., the height of summer) might be worth prioritizing. Perhaps travel there a few times and get a feel for when it works best for you!

Travel tips for visiting Greece

Regardless of when you visit Greece, there are always ways to make your journeys to and from the Mediterranean that little bit easier. Plus, it always pays to stay safe, whether you've been to Greece before, are traveling in a group, or are going it alone.

Based on our own personal experiences of Greek holidays over the years, here are some top tips you'll want to remember:

  • When it comes to paying your way around Greece, you're going to need Euros. However, you'll find that there are plenty of stalls and vendors that only accept cash, so be willing to carry paper and plastic (or Apple Pay, for example) when you go.
  • If you're keen to sample the best food in Greece (and why wouldn't you be), keep in mind that in many cases, Greek restaurants stay open late because people tend to eat dinner after 9pm. You don't have to change your own dining routine completely, just keep an open mind.
  • English is broadly spoken around the country and the islands, mainly thanks to tourism - but Greek, of course, is the main language spoken, so it really won't hurt to learn a few phrases before you go!
  • Always have an eSIM, for Greece or wider Europe, ready to go. SIMOVO's eSIMs connect you to the best available mobile networks wherever you are, so make sure to buy, download, and install before you touch down in Greece.
