Best Time to Visit South Korea by Season

Best Time to Visit South Korea by Season

South Korea is one of those fabulous destinations that's absolutely wonderful to explore all year round, thanks to its gorgeous landscape and its world-famous shopping and entertainment scenes. That said, there are always likely to be some times of year that are considered better than others for you to make a break away here.

The best time to visit South Korea is, ultimately, down to your own tastes and what you really want to do on your travels. The best time to travel for a lot of people, too, boils down to money - as there will be peak tourism seasons to consider if you really want to get the best deals possible.

In this guide, we take a look at the best time to visit South Korea based on seasons, what's going on, and costs. We also share with you some of our favorite travel tips for exploring the region so you're prepared to make the most of even a short break out East.

South Korea weather and seasons explained

South Korea's weather and climate are actually fairly predictable for the most part, which will come as relief to anyone who's used to traveling elsewhere in the East, such as Singapore, which witnesses random rainfall across the year amid a tropical climate.

The key thing to remember about South Korea's weather is that all four seasons do tend to be quite distinct. You won't have to worry too much about timing it right so that you catch the tail-end of the dry season, for example. We'll explore what you can expect from each of the seasons in South Korea, on average, below.

Korea generally experiences a pleasant climate that gets nice and hot in the summer, and surprisingly chilly in the winter. That means while you can expect snowy slopes in the mountains come the end of the year, you can still expect a warm and sunny getaway during the summer months.

It's also worth remembering that Korea's natural features will change dramatically with the seasons, too, so if taking tours of the blossom trees here is high on your agenda (for example), it's worth planning ahead.

Above all, we recommend you check out our guide to building a South Korea itinerary alongside planning for weather, seasonality, and costs. You might, for example, wish to build multiple itineraries around different times of the year, so you're always ready with a plan no matter when you're able to make a break for it.

South Korea by season

As mentioned, South Korea is fairly predictable when it comes to seasonal weather and events you can expect to unfold. Springs are mild, summers are warm, autumns/falls are brisk, and winters are chilly.

With that in mind, let's take a closer look at what you can expect from Korea season by season, depending on when you'd like to travel.

South Korea in spring

The SIMOVO team generally agrees that any time between March and June is the best time of year to visit South Korea. It's during the spring that you'll have access to pleasant weather and comfortable temperatures, and you'll be able to see green spaces across the region really bloom at their best.

Spring is very popular with visitors who are keen to explore South Korea's National Parks spaces, for example, and especially with those who want to see the famous pink blossom trees at their most beautiful.

With that in mind, spring is actually the most popular season to visit South Korea. Therefore, be prepared for larger crowds and tourist scenes, and for travel and accommodation to be at its most expensive.

South Korea in summer

Summers in South Korea are just as glorious as the springs, and for that reason, they also tend to be very popular with travelers from all over the world. Focusing on the positives, it's around this time when you'll be able to enjoy the breezy coastal cities at their best, and when you can stroll around without largely having to worry about wrapping up warm.

That said, like many Eastern territories, South Korea is sometimes prone to monsoon rains, and with the temperatures reaching 30 C or 86 F, you can expect a pretty humid holiday. That, and along with spring, summer tends to command the highest prices for travel and hotel stays across the year.

South Korea in autumn/fall

Fall in South Korea actually starts to feel much less muggy, and while the temperatures are certainly starting to drop, the autumnal scenes here are still worth jetting in to see for yourself. Again, the National Park scenes are well worth exploring during this time - just be ready to wrap up a little warmer, though you can still expect mild temperatures.

There's actually a bit of a divide in the SIMOVO crew as to whether spring or fall is best for you to visit South Korea purely for its natural beauty - while springtime pretty much clinches the battle, there's a strong argument for wanting to check out the region at both sides of the summer if you can.

South Korea in winter

South Korea certainly doesn't do things by halves when it comes to winter chills, so be prepared for any visits to Seoul and beyond to drop into minus degrees if you're heading here between December and February.

Winter trips to South Korea tend to be very popular with winter sports fans, and honestly, the season is at least pretty dry!

Best months to visit South Korea

It's a choice between March, April, May, September, or October when it comes to the best months to visit South Korea. Honestly, any time in the spring will offer you lovely weather and wonderful natural views. The best time for cherry blossoms in Korea is absolutely April or May, for reference.

That said, spring and summer are more expensive than other seasons - and if you're more in tune with going for a quick ski or touring snowcapped mountains, winter makes for a more affordable break away. Just keep in mind that if you want to sample the best Korean food but don't want to break the bank, you'll need to avoid the tourist rush.
