Having issues with your eSIM not activating, connecting, or showing up at all? You're not alone — and in most cases, the fix is quick. Whether you're using a SIMOVO eSIM or one from another provider, this guide walks you through eight reliable fixes that solve most eSIM problems in under five minutes.

1. Check if your device supports eSIM

Not all phones support eSIM, and some networks only allow eSIM on unlocked devices.

  • Confirm your phone supports eSIM — all iPhones from XS/XR onwards do.
  • Make sure it is unlocked for use with other networks.
  • On iPhone: Settings > General > About > scroll to "Digital SIM"
  • On Android: Settings > About Phone > SIM Status
[warning]Devices bought through carriers — especially in the UK and US — are often locked by default. An eSIM from another provider will not activate on a locked phone.[/warning]

2. Restart your phone

Yes, it's basic — but you'd be amazed how often a restart fixes eSIM activation, especially after a new install.

  • Power off your phone completely.
  • Wait 10 seconds.
  • Power it back on and wait 30–60 seconds to see if the network connects.

3. Make sure mobile data is turned on

Sometimes it's just a settings hiccup.

  • iPhone: Settings > Mobile Data
  • Android: Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile Network
  • Confirm mobile data is on, data roaming is on, and your eSIM line is selected for data usage.

4. Activate the eSIM profile again

The eSIM may not have installed correctly — or at all.

  • Reinstall the eSIM from the QR code or manual activation code provided by SIMOVO.
  • iPhone: Settings > Mobile Data > Add eSIM
  • Android: Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Add eSIM
[tip title="QR code install"]If you have been emailed a QR code, simply scan it with your phone's camera when prompted. Make sure you are connected to Wi-Fi during installation.[/tip]

5. Turn Airplane Mode on and off

This quick toggle can force the phone to re-register your eSIM profile on the network.

  • Switch Airplane Mode on for 10 seconds.
  • Switch it off again.
  • Wait up to one minute for signal bars to appear.

6. Check you're in a coverage area

If you're travelling, your eSIM may be installed correctly, but you're not yet in the country where it activates.

  • Check the coverage area of your eSIM plan.
  • Confirm you have landed in the correct country.
  • Turn on data roaming.
[tip title="SIMOVO coverage"]SIMOVO plans clearly list supported countries. If you are unsure whether your destination is covered, check the product page before you travel.[/tip]

7. Manually select the carrier network

Some devices do not automatically connect to the best partner network.

  • iPhone: Settings > Mobile > Network Selection
  • Android: Settings > Mobile Network > Network Operators
  • Turn off automatic selection, then manually choose a listed carrier.
[tip title="Which carrier to choose"]Try each listed carrier in turn — your eSIM will connect to whichever one SIMOVO partners with in that country. For example, in Spain your eSIM may need to latch onto Movistar or Orange.[/tip]

8. Reset Network Settings (last resort)

[warning]Resetting your network settings erases all saved Wi-Fi passwords and VPN settings. Only do this if every other fix has failed — and make sure you still have access to your SIMOVO QR code or activation email, as you will need to reinstall your eSIM afterwards.[/warning]
  • iPhone: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Reset > Reset Network Settings
  • Android: Settings > System > Reset > Reset Network Settings

After resetting, reinstall your eSIM and reboot the phone.

[faq] [q]Why is my eSIM not showing up after scanning the QR code?[/q] [a]The most common causes are an incompatible or locked device, a failed scan, or the eSIM profile not downloading fully. Try rescanning the QR code with a stable Wi-Fi connection during installation. If the problem persists, contact SIMOVO support at care@simovo.com.[/a] [q]Can I use an eSIM on a locked phone?[/q] [a]No — eSIMs from third-party providers will not activate on a carrier-locked phone. Contact your original carrier to request an unlock, which is usually free once your contract period has ended.[/a] [q]Why does my eSIM show as installed but not connecting?[/q] [a]This is usually a settings issue. Check that mobile data is switched on, data roaming is enabled, and your eSIM line is set as the active data line. Toggling Airplane Mode on and off can also force the phone to re-register on the network.[/a] [q]How do I know which carrier to select when choosing manually?[/q] [a]When you browse available networks manually, you will see a list of carriers in your current location. Try each one — your eSIM should connect to whichever carrier SIMOVO partners with in that country. If you are unsure, SIMOVO's support team can confirm the correct carrier for your destination.[/a] [q]Will resetting network settings delete my eSIM?[/q] [a]On most devices, yes — a network reset will remove installed eSIM profiles. You will need to reinstall your SIMOVO eSIM afterwards using the original QR code or activation code. Make sure you have access to your original activation email before performing a reset.[/a] [q]Does my SIMOVO eSIM activate automatically when I land?[/q] [a]In most cases, yes — your eSIM should connect automatically when you arrive in a supported country with data roaming switched on. If it does not connect within a few minutes of landing, start with the Airplane Mode toggle in fix five, then try manual carrier selection in fix seven.[/a] [/faq]
