The Global eSIM Adoption Index 2025: Mapping the Future of Mobile Connectivity
eSIM has shifted from a clever travel hack to the default way millions connect. Physical SIM trays are disappearing from premium phones, airports are replacing SIM kiosks with QR codes, and travellers expect to be online the moment they land. To help customers, partners and journalists see the global picture at a glance, SIMOVO has created the Global eSIM Adoption Index 2025. It combines verified operator data with Apple carrier listings to show the countries that are fully ready, those that are progressing, and those where information remains limited.
How we score countries
Each market is classified by Carrier Support Status and a Confidence score from 1 to 3. We also label a Region to make it easy to compare clusters.
- Listed on Apple – the market appears on Apple’s carrier page for eSIM compatible iPhone models, which is a strong signal of mainstream support.
- Confirmed via operator – verified directly with operators or through hands-on activation in that market.
- Limited or conditional – eSIM works under specific conditions, limited device ranges or partial operator coverage.
- Low confidence – conflicting information or incomplete sources. We flag these clearly so readers understand the uncertainty.
The map below is interactive. Hover over any country to see its status, region and confidence. Use the buttons to download the dataset as CSV or Excel for your own analysis.
Regional highlights
Europe has near universal readiness across EU and Schengen markets, plus the UK and Switzerland. Multi-operator support and consumer awareness are high, so adoption continues to grow with little friction.
Americas are mature at the top end, with the US and Canada long since comfortable with eSIM-only flagships. Across Latin America, operator support is strong in many urban centres, with steady expansion to secondary cities.
Asia-Pacific features some of the most advanced eSIM ecosystems: Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Australia are all excellent for travellers. Large markets like India and Indonesia are progressing quickly as compatible devices saturate the market.
Middle East is a bright spot, particularly across the GCC where policy and infrastructure support consumer eSIM. Travellers typically enjoy smooth activation and fast 5G networks.
Africa is varied. South Africa, Kenya, Egypt and Morocco are moving steadily, while other countries are earlier in their rollouts or still formalising consumer policies.
Caribbean continues to gain momentum. Destinations like Barbados, Grenada, St Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago are strong for visitors who want instant data without visiting shops or swapping plastic.
Why this matters for travellers
eSIM saves time, reduces waste and removes friction. With SIMOVO, you can install a plan before you fly, land connected, and top up online. For frequent flyers and island-hoppers, the ability to span regions with one profile is a game-changer. As physical SIM trays disappear, eSIM is not just convenient, it is becoming essential.
About the China classification
In our dataset, China (mainland) is classified as Limited or conditional with Confidence 1. That means there is support in some contexts but the information is inconsistent for typical consumer use. We surface that uncertainty on purpose so readers can weigh it appropriately. When we have stronger, broadly consistent verification, the confidence will increase.
Methodology and transparency
We combine Apple carrier listings, operator documentation and real-world activation checks. Where information is incomplete, we mark confidence conservatively. If you represent a network or regulator and want to help refine entries, please contact the SIMOVO team. This index will be updated as new confirmations arrive.
Goodbye SIM cards. Hello adventure.
