Best Neighborhoods in Seoul to Explore

If you've already dipped into our guide on how to build the perfect Korea itinerary for your next vacation, you might already know that we seriously recommend exploring Seoul, the capital, as a priority. One of the biggest reasons for doing this is thanks to the variety of vibrant neighborhoods here - which balance the old and new perfectly, offering palace sightseeing to modern shopping and cuisine.

In this guide, we take a close look at some of the best neighborhoods in Seoul to explore, whether you are completely new to the region or are simply looking for a few new adventures to take on as you revisit the area. The city itself can seem a little overwhelming if you're used to quieter or smaller holidays - but provided you build a plan and take your time to enjoy all its highlights, you'll soon have a vacation you'll remember for years to come (and for all the right reasons).

Seoul neighborhoods overview

Seoul isn't just a big city in its own right - it's actually made up of lots of individual areas and neighborhoods, with 25 distinct municipal districts, or gu. Think of gu a little bit like the districts you'll find in NYC, or the boroughs that surround Greater London.

It's within these gu that you'll find individual neighborhoods - there are hundreds of them! Some are trendy and artistic, others are laid-back and peaceful, and others are luxurious and affluent. Therefore, provided you know what you're looking for from your Seoul adventure, it shouldn't take you too long to pick your first stop.

That said, with literally hundreds of neighborhoods across the 25 gu, narrowing down the best places to visit can seem a little daunting, especially to first-time visitors or those who are used to more straightforward itineraries! That's a big reason why we've put this guide together - take it from a team full of Seoul explorers who have more than a little experience in picking out the best sights and sounds.

Best neighborhoods in Seoul

Narrowing down the best neighborhoods in Seoul out of hundreds wasn't an easy task, but if you know anything about us here at SIMOVO, it's that we love a challenge!

So, having surveyed the team and taken a deeper dive into what other seasoned travelers across the web have to say, we narrowed our top picks for this guide down to Myeongdong, Hongdae, Gangnam, Insadong, and Itaewon. Let's take a closer look at why these Seoul neighborhoods should top your must-visit list the next time you jet across.

Myeongdong

Myeongdong is central, well-connected, and offers all of the world-famous Korean shopping and entertainment charms you've seen a million times or more on TikTok. Many people love heading to this neighborhood first because it's so well connected to others in the city limits - it's the perfect base. It's also one of the best spots in the city to enjoy authentic street food, and you can take in panoramic views across the city up the N Seoul Tower.

Hongdae

Hongdae is a buzzing little neighborhood that's built around the city's local universities, meaning it has a young, trendy, artistic charm. It's great for exploring Seoul's unique souvenir and market scenes, and at night, its club scene and urban culture really come alive. If you're looking for a quirky day out, prioritize Hongdae after you've based down and explored Myeongdong up close.

Gangnam

Gangnam is world famous for being one of Seoul's most opulent districts, not least thanks to Psy's global megahit “Gangnam Style” from several years ago. Big and bold, Gangnam is home to skyscraping towers, high-rise accommodations, and luxury mall experiences. That said, we'd recommend only visiting Gangnam if you have a pretty robust budget - opulent experiences come at opulent prices!

Insadong

If you're looking for the best of Seoul's arts and crafts, then make Insadong a priority. Here you'll find workshops, art galleries, and unique craft stalls and vendors - making it a must-visit if you're on the hunt for unique treasures to take back home. It's also a great area to enjoy traditional teahouse scenes - but museum and shopping fanatics should make a beeline here too.

Itaewon

Itaewon is possibly best known for its nightlife, being one of the most liberal neighborhoods in the city - in fact, it's also one of the most “Westernized” due to its history of being close to US military operations. If you miss a touch of the Western culture or simply want to cut loose, here's the place to do it.

Best areas for nightlife in Seoul

Seoul offers a great balance between traditional charms and buzzing, modern nightlife, and if you really want to dive into the unique restaurant and club scenes here, we recommend you check out Hongdae for live music, and Itaewon for its alternative culture.

That said, it's also worth heading to Euljiro for its retro vibes and rooftop bars, and Gangnam if you're looking for a luxury night out (and have a flexible budget!).

Best areas for shopping in Seoul

As you'll see from our Korea shopping guide, shopping is a big deal indeed in Seoul - if not nationwide. Therefore, most of the neighborhoods and districts in the city have fantastic, unique shopping experiences.

Prioritize central areas such as Myeongdong, for example, for mainstream shopping, and areas like Hongdae for independent stalls and boutiques. We also suggest taking a look at Dongdaemun for 24-hour shopping (if your budget can hold out)!

Seoul travel tips

There are always some things you'll need to keep in mind when visiting Seoul, whether you are completely new to the area or are coming back after a few years away. Based on our own experiences and advice from other experts across the web, here are some final Seoul travel tips to keep in mind.

  • Dip into our Korea food guide so you know what to expect from Seoul's delicious street food scenes and traditional restaurants. If you can sample some Korean cuisine before you travel, do so - as this will help you to prepare for what to expect when you arrive!
  • Always travel with an eSIM for South Korea, even if you don't think you will use your smartphone much on your vacation! You might need to stay connected to family and friends, to activate travel cards, or to make payments. Doing this with an eSIM means you always have access to reliable data from the best local networks (and you pay in advance, too).
  • While you'll be able to pay by card in many of Seoul's neighborhoods, it's wise to keep some cash on your person in case you visit street food vendors and traditional businesses.
  • You normally won't have to tip in Seoul - it's neither expected nor warranted, so don't always feel you have to add extra to your bills.
  • When traveling on public transportation, keep your music to yourself, and always prioritize seating for elderly and pregnant people.
  • If you are going to use public transport, get a T-money card so you always have credit on hand and can easily board buses and subway cars. Cards are available and can be topped up at local convenience stores.
