Cappadocia travel overview

It's fair to say that there is no one average or ideal Turkey itinerary - your vacation is what you make it - but, we seriously recommend checking out Cappadocia if you're keen to take in bizarre new sights and explore hills and valleys from hundreds of feet up in the air!

And yet, there's more to Cappadocia than just hot air balloons, even though that's rightfully what the area is best known for. Taking a closer look around, you'll be able to stay in hotels built into cave walls, explore the ancient underground cities left behind centuries ago, and take some heart-pounding hikes around the famous valleys.

A holiday in Cappadocia feels like a million miles away from Istanbul and Antalya - but they are absolutely part of the same country! If you're visiting Turkey for its unique history and architecture, the best places to visit in Cappadocia will interest you - it's just as famous for its UNESCO buildings and ancient frescoes as it is for its balloons and valleys.

Best places to visit in Cappadocia

Take it from us - this list is built mainly around our personal opinions and insight from genuine people who have traveled across Cappadocia many times. Whether you're looking for alternative takes on Turkish food outside of the main cities or just want to gaze upon the volcanic landscapes, you'll want to prioritize the following places to visit.

We recommend checking out the Goreme Open Air Museum, Love Valley, Uchisar Castle, the Pasabag Fairy Chimneys, and the Derinkuyu Underground City. Let's drive into why these should be the priority must-sees when you land.

Goreme Open Air Museum

Why not start the list with a UNESCO World Heritage Site? The Goreme Open Air Museum is a truly unique day out, hosting several Byzantine churches and chapels left over as ruins from centuries ago. It's home to some fascinating carvings and frescoes, many of which are hidden away in the rocks - and, believe it or not, you won't be able to take photos or videos when you're inside, so be sure to drink in all the visual glory!

Love Valley

Cappadocia is just as famous for its valleys as it is for its hot air balloon displays, and Love Valley in particular has gained international attention for its rock formations. Let's just say they're shaped… a certain way! Regardless of connotations, Love Valley offers a truly unique look across some of the most beautiful rock formations in broader Turkey, a truly unspoilt landscape that still has plenty of access to modern facilities if you need them.

Uchisar Castle

Where there are churches and chapels, there are castles - and Uchisar Castle stands proud as the highest point in the Cappadocia region. At first glance, it looks quite unlike a castle at all - but, like the ancient churches in Goreme, you'll soon find that it's built into the rock face! It's a charged attraction, meaning you'll need to pay to get to the top, but trust me - the views are 100% worth it.

Pasabag Fairy Chimneys

The natural wonders don't stop here, as Pasabag Valley (otherwise known as Monk's Valley) is home to fairy chimneys - mushroom-esque basalt caps that litter the volcanic landscape. Across the area, you'll also be able to spot ancient caves carved out by hermits and monks, which were once used for meditation.

Derinkuyu Underground City

If there's one thing the ancient Cappadocians were known for, it's for excavating an impressive underground network! This underground city is thought to travel all the way down beyond 85 meters, and is thought to have sheltered tens of thousands of people. It's a truly ingenious undertaking - people were able to take shelter down here with access to water and hide from threats.

Best time to visit Cappadocia

While it's usually best to visit Turkey generally in the spring or fall, Cappadocia is a little different - mainly because you're going to want to head here when the landscapes look their most stunning! With that in mind, fall days are still recommended for the golden, reddish hues - but winter trips are still comfortable if chilly. You'll still be able to take balloon flights during these months, too!

That said, summer is the peak season for Cappadocia, generally, and that means you'll usually have the best pick of balloon flights and packages. The downside is, of course, that it can get extremely hot out here at the height of July and August - so, be sure to take plenty of bottled water around with you and to use sunscreen as much as you can.

If you plan to hike around Cappadocia, it's likely to be most comfortable and accessible during the spring. During this time, you'll also be able to spot wildflowers across the region, too.

Crucially, Cappadocia's valleys are mesmerizing all year round - and the best time to go will depend entirely on your personal comfort level and your budget. You don't have to follow the crowd, but take a look at some of the best photos from the region around the times of year you'd like to travel for some inspiration.
