Turkey Packing List for Every Season

Turkey Packing List for Every Season

If you're planning a trip to Turkey, the fun part is knowing exactly what you're going to pack! After you've built your Turkey itinerary and you have a good idea of where you're going and what you'd like to see, it makes perfect sense to start thinking about the essentials and everyday items you'll need on your trip.

While many people go away on adventures pretty spontaneously, much of the SIMOVO crew here agrees that having a Turkey packing list is a good idea so you're not over-encumbered or left short on things you really need. So, we've put together a quick guide on what you need to think about taking with you on your flight or boat across - and feel free to amend your list based on our suggestions, however you see fit!

Turkey packing list overview

Firstly, far be it from us to tell you exactly what you need to pack when traveling to Turkey! We all have different needs and comforts, but we've put together a guide on what our team typically includes in luggage and hand baggage whenever we head out in this direction.

Remember, while Turkey is a wonderfully warm country most of the time, it still makes sense to try to pack clothes and other items based on the season and on where you are staying. For example, your wardrobe for the coast might be quite different compared to what you wear if you're just sticking to the cities!

So, we're splitting this guide up a little so you know about what essentials to take with you, and what we think you'll need to consider when heading to the beach or into cities like Istanbul and Antalya.

Essential items to pack for Turkey

In our collective opinion (and many people online agree with us!), the essential items for any Turkey packing list should include a good selection of clothing for different seasons, vital travel documents, electronics and travel gear you might need, and health and personal items to help make your adventures that little bit more comfortable. Let's break these categories down.

Clothing for different seasons

It's easy to assume that you'll always need light clothing whenever you visit Turkey, but there are still distinctions between seasons. From late spring through to mid-fall, for example, you will likely do best packing for a sunny vacation - as the temperatures are warm and it's unlikely you'll experience a lot of wet days when traveling inland.

However, when it gets late in the fall and you're heading toward early spring, the temperatures drop (though still not super uncomfortably), and the number of wet days usually increases. So, be sure to pack weatherproof and waterproof clothing and items if you head here any time between October and March.

Regardless of the season, it is also crucial that you take a selection of modest clothing if you wish to explore mosques and respect Muslim communities across the country. You can do this perfectly reasonably with light clothing, so don't worry too much about sweltering yourself with too many layers.

So, we recommend packing clothes that cover shoulders and legs, quality footwear, and stylish items if you're taking advantage of that delicious Turkish food at some of the cities' best-loved restaurants. Just top up with jackets and cardigans if you're heading outside of spring and summer.

Travel documents and essentials

As always, make sure you have a valid passport to hand - and depending on where you're traveling from, you may also need to obtain and prove that you have a Turkish eVisa. If you're visiting from the US, for example, you can stay for up to 90 days (three months) within a 180 day period (6 months) before you'll need to obtain extra permission to stay.

Electronics and travel gear

We all have our creature comforts, and if you're anything like me, you'll want to take a few devices with you for entertainment and peace of mind. Consider packing all of the following:

  • Smartphone(s)
  • An eSIM (more on this below!)
  • The right travel plugs or adapters for Turkey (you need a Type C or Type F)
  • Power banks to keep charged on the go
  • Laptop (if needed)
  • Travel cushions
  • Baggage scale (if needed)

Health and personal items

We all have different health needs, so naturally, your take on this part of the Turkey packing list might differ from ours. However, we generally recommend that you pack:

  • Sunscreen (ideally SPF 30+ or more)
  • Sun protection (glasses, hats, etc.)
  • Prescription medicine
  • First aid kit(s)
  • Toiletries (moisturisers, soap, etc.)

Do also remember that you will need to pick up bottled water when you land, as it is not considered safe to drink straight from the faucet across Turkey's various regions.

What to pack for Istanbul and cities

If you've read up on our Cappadocia guide, you'll know that there are plenty of things to get out and see across some of Turkey's best towns, cities, and other regions. However, what you'll need to pack for an inland adventure might vary compared to what you'll need for coastal stays.

Again, we recommend considering modest clothing if you're visiting Muslim areas or touring mosques, and using a small backpack or carry bag so you're not too weighed down while walking around. The best idea is to pack light and to dress modestly!

It's here where you might also need your phone and GPS the most as you explore some of the cities' famous sights (and hunt down restaurants). So, never pack for a Turkish city break without some kind of portable battery (and an eSIM)!

What to pack for beaches and resorts

Expectations regarding beachwear tend to be a little more laid-back, meaning you may be able to wear two-piece swimsuits - but it's still worth covering up if you can, especially once you've enjoyed your day at the beach and are heading back towards city spaces.

As with most beach trips, we recommend packing quick-dry towels, water shoes to traverse pebbled sand, and a waterproof pouch to keep your phone or other devices in. If you do move between different shops and stalls around beach areas, carry something lightweight to cover up with so that you meet modesty expectations.

Turkey travel packing tips

Now you have a good idea of what to put on your Turkey packing list, let's close our guide with a few final ideas on how to make packing and planning that little bit easier.

  • Do you have an eSIM for Turkey yet? If not, now's the time to download one - with SIMOVO, you're covered with the best-available mobile data in your area as soon as you land - just activate before you go. That means no more scary, unexpected bills, either.
  • Pack for culture before comfort. We've mentioned this quite a bit already, but Turkey is a modest nation in many ways - so dressing conservatively is very important if you want to take in the sights.
  • Protect your items on the go with a crossbody bag and keep all your valuables with you.
  • Protect your feet on the go with comfortable shoes - many of the streets here are cobbled, and the beaches are packed with pebbles!
